Book Origins

I Didn’t Have Nursing School Figured Out Either

Before I became a nurse, nursing instructor, or nurse practitioner, I was a nursing student trying to figure all of this out too.

My path didn’t start perfectly. I was rejected from nursing school, reapplied, and eventually got in.

At the time, I thought getting accepted was the hard part.

I was wrong.

Nursing School Has a Learning Curve Nobody Really Explains

  • The studying feels different.

  • The exams feel different.

  • Clinical can be intimidating.

  • And it’s easy to wonder whether everyone else somehow has it figured out.

  • Most of us didn’t.

  • We just learned as we went.

Then I Saw It From the Other Side

Years later, while teaching undergraduate nursing students, I saw many of the same struggles I had experienced myself.

  1. Smart students doubting themselves.

  2. Students studying hard but not effectively.

  3. Students devastated by one bad exam.

  4. Students terrified of making mistakes.

  5. It reminded me that nursing school isn’t only about learning the material.

  6. It’s also about learning how to navigate the experience.

So I Wrote the Book I Wish I Had

Nursing School Without Losing Your Mind is not another textbook or NCLEX review guide.

It’s about everything that happens between the textbooks.

  1. Studying.

  2. Exams.

  3. Clinicals.

  4. Stress.

  5. Mistakes.

  6. Confidence.

  7. And the things nobody really explains until you’re already living them.

You Don’t Have to Be Perfect

  • You’re there to learn.

  • Ask questions.

  • Make adjustments.

  • Accept correction.

  • Keep going.

If this book makes nursing school feel a little more manageable, or simply reminds you that you’re not the only one who has struggled with it, then it did what I wrote it to do.
